5 Tips For Choosing the Right Lamp For Your Space

Choosing the right lamp for your space goes beyond “But it’s so cute!”. You need to consider what you’ll be using the lamp for, accent lighting or task lighting, and unfortunately, there is some math involved.

The following is a list of 5 tips to help you take the guess work out of choosing the perfect lamp for your space.

Height is one of the most important things to consider when purchasing a lamp for your space. One simple rule to remember is to make sure the bottom of the lamp shade is no higher than eye level. This ensures you won’t be looking directly into the bulb. A few factors that can help control that are the size of the shade but also, the height of the table you are setting the lamp on.

With the first tip fresh in your mind, one thing to remember is the ratio of shade to lamp. The shade should be approximately 1/3 of the total height of the lamp. I say approximately because it is rare that you find a lamp/shade combo with these perfect dimensions but as long as it’s close it will be visually appealing.

While we’re on the topic of ratios, the width of your shade is also important. The width of the bottom of your lamp shade should be twice the width of the base of lamp. Again, these are approximate, just so it is pleasing to the eye.

The table your lamp is sitting on is almost as important as the lamp itself, you do not want your lamp to look top heavy in your space. To keep that from happening, first make sure your shade is not wider than the table it’s sitting on and also make sure your lamp is a maximum of 1.5 times the height of your table.

Lastly, consider what you’re using the lamp for, is it simply accent lighting or are you using it for reading. If you are using your lamp for reading, you may want to consider a tapered shade. Even though drum, or barrel shades are very popular right now, they divide the light between the surface and the ceiling, taking away from the amount of available reading light.

I personally love decorating and lighting my space with lamps, I much prefer their soft accent lighting to overhead ambient lighting. And one more quick thing to remember, the lamps in your space do not all have to match. You will create a unique and eclectic look to your space with mismatched (yet coordinating) lamps!
