A Simple Guide to Furniture Styles
Updated: Dec 11, 2021
There are so many different styles of furniture that it can be mind boggling to figure out which style suits you and your space.
The following is a list of some of the most popular styles to help you choose.
Mission Style
This style was born from the Arts and Crafts movement as a reaction to the elaborate, yet poorly made, mass produced furniture of the time. It is identifiable by the straight, simple lines, little decoration and flat panels the showcase wood grain. This style is built to be durable for everyday use.

Farmhouse
Country Farmhouse is known for it’s simplicity and rustic charm. The use of a warm color pallet and comfortable materials make it inviting and cozy. In recent times, Modern Farmhouse has gained huge popularity thanks to many HGTV programs. It utilizes more warm, neutral colors, natural materials and vintage accessories.

Shabby Chic
Just as the name suggests, it combines “Shabby” (worn, vintage furniture) with “Chic” (typically painted white with interesting brush strokes). This style evokes a warm, romantic feel to a room.

Modern vs Contemporary
Modern is a specific style, while Contemporary is fluid. Modern design employs clean, straight lines, and warm, neutral colors accented by vivid pops of color. It is uncluttered and inviting, comfort without the fussiness. Contemporary is constantly changing to reflect the trends of today. The contemporary style of today is very different than it was 50 years ago.
Mid-Century Modern
Originally designed for small homes in 1940’s post-war America, this style is very simple in its design. Clean lines, uncluttered, but not without interest. I like to think of it as simple style with spunk!
Traditional
Traditional style has been one of the most popular styles used to decorate homes, with warm, rich colors, it is comfortable and classic. If you purchase a piece of traditional furniture, you can be sure it will never go out of style.

Although these styles can all be very different, don’t be afraid to mix and match to create a unique look all of your own!
